This is a doptone. Using ultrasound, it detects fetal heart tones. I use it many many times at every birth I attend. I've heard countless little beats from soon-to-be-born babies using this doppler.
And this is me-- today. Hearing MY OWN baby's heartbeat for the first time. 170 beats strong. Yep, that's right...SURPRISE! Baby #4 is due in late April. Nothing compares to hearing that little heart fluttering away. A sweet sweet sound.

Congratulations! I've been a lurker (I wish there was a better term... fan?) of your site for a long while, so long I can't even remember how I came upon it.
I'm so excited for you, and I too am due at the end of April, with our second! It will be fun to follow along with someone else in similarly pregnant shoes.

Oh my gosh, how exciting.
When I was pregnant I used to go into an empty room at the hospital( I'm a nurse), lay on the bed and listen to my boy with the doppler. Music to a mother's ears.
You make me miss that with this photo.

Congratulations! I know it is a joy to hear your baby's heart beat. That is amazing. I don't have any children but I know that I would love to be able to hear that sound that lets me know everything is great.
